Bake sale: a how-to guide

Bake sales are everyone’s favourite fundraiser for a reason – people love cake! Here’s a handy guide for cooking up your own bake sale.

Find a location

When deciding on a location for your bake sale, you’ll want to consider the following:

Foot-traffic –Try and find somewhere that lots of people will be visiting, as this way you’ll have many more potential customers!

Permission – You must get permission to run your bake sale from the person in charge of the location.

Weather – Make sure that you have a back-up ‘rain site’ either indoors or under a shelter in case the weather turns

Choose a date

When choosing a date for your bake sale, try and think about these questions:

Can I coincide my event with a relevant month? For example:

  • Brain Tumour Awareness Month: March
  • Stroke Awareness Month: May
  • Headache Awareness Month: June

Is there a day, or time of day, that’s likely to be busier for your location? For example: Do most people come into your office on a Wednesday?

Get in touch with our team!

Once you have your time, date, and location – it’s time to get in touch with our team by emailing us to events@brainresearchuk.org.uk. We can send you materials to help make your event stand out, including:

  • Branded banners and balloons, to make any event stand out
  • Stickers – because everyone loves stickers!
  • Leaflets all about the research that your hard work supports
  • Collection tins and sponsorship forms to collect cash donations

Spread the word!

You want to make sure that you’re telling people about your event in enough time for them to make sure they can come, but not too far away from the date that you’re having it so people forget! We recommend 2-3 weeks before your event to give you lots of time to shout about what you’re up to.

Social media can be a great tool to help you spread the word about your bake sale. You could post on your Instagram story, your Facebook Page, and even your LinkedIn with a date, time, and location, as well as some graphics and charity logos (which you can find here). This is also the perfect opportunity to share why you are wanting to fundraise for Brain Research UK, so don’t forget to share your why.

Source your goodies!

This is where you get to be really creative. If you’re a natural born Mary Berry, then it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get baking! If, however, you’re more of a Mel or Sue then this will be the time for you to either recruit a friend to help you with the baking, or to find where you are going to buy your goodies from.

TOP TIP: 50% OFF doughnuts

Krispy Kreme do a ‘Charity Donut Day’ Promotion, where you can buy doughnuts for 50% off! Read more about it on the Charity Fundraising Doughnuts page of the Krispy Kreme website.

Prepare for the big day

Here’s a handy check-list for you to make sure that you are prepared for your event:

  • I have permission to run a bake sale at my location
  • I know where I'm getting my sweet treats from, and will have enough to go around
  • I know how I am getting myself and my sweet treats to my location
  • I have gotten in touch with the team at Brain Research UK and asked for fund raising materials
  • I have posted on social media to spread awareness of my bake sale
  • I have followed the relevant health and safety procedures

Send the money raised to Brain Research UK

We have a guide on paying in donations to help you get your funds to us safely.

Share your success!

Often, lots of donations come in after the actual event has finished. We recommend posting about your event on social media to remind those that had wanted to donate about your bake sale. Please tag us in anything that you post on social media, we love seeing how you get on!
